Letting Go

Put a treat inside a tree, with a hole that is just large enough, and a monkey will reach in, grasp the treat, and then be unable to pull his hand out because it is too big when clenched. The funny thing is that even as he panics he will not let go of the treat. He is trapped. This seems so unintelligent to us, and yet it is such a perfect metaphor for our own clinging ways.

Letting go is obviously the key to freedom, but this isn’t just about a monkey’s hand in a tree. We cling to ideas that make us miserable (that we have to be rich, have to impress others, have to have things go a certain way), and the solution is the same. We need to learn to simply let go.
