Window Valances

The window valances are a type of topper to a window. It does not cover the entire window like a curtain or drape might, but adds a framing feature. There are different styles of valances with pleated jabots, or fabric strips that hang down the side of the window that can be made of a variety of fabrics. The nice thing about making a valance with a jabot is that it comes in three different parts; the centre piece and then two side pieces. This makes it easier to adjust for different width windows. The centre piece can be lengthened for wider windows. That is especially nice if you want to take your window treatments with you if you move around or are just renting a home.    Another type of valance is the cornice valance. This is a hard piece of plywood or foam core that is padded and then covered with fabric. To add dimension to a window treatment, coordinating drapery can be hung from a curtain rod under the window valance.
