Pirate gold coins.
Everyone has seen the movies with pirates where they plunder the ships in search of gold? People often mistake the Piece Of Eight as a gold coin, but it was actually a silver Spanish dollar. Escudos are the standard Spanish gold coins, although they were rare even in that time. The chances of seeing an Escudo back then was the equivalent of seeing a one thousand dollar bill today. The Escudos came in many different denominations, but due to their rarity most people would find difficulty in discerning the differences. Doubloon is a term that was used by people of that age to identify the gold coins. When the common person references Doubloons they were usually referring to any Spanish gold coin.
