Information About Model Trains

I’d like information on the difference between the types of model trains available for purchase at local hobby stores or online. I’ve tried to do a little research on the Internet but most things I’ve read seem to approach the subject assuming the reader already has some knowledge of trains. I know there are different scales that refer to the sizes of the trains but I really don’t understand what that means. I’ve also learned that there is one popular brand called Graham Farish, but I’m not sure if that name refers to an actual type of train or an actual product line.
