Quarantining Sick Fish
There are three main reasons to quarantine a goldfish. One, before introducing a new fish to a tank with other fish in it, it’s important to quarantine a fish to see if it shows sign of disease or illness. Second, if a fish gets sick, quarantining it can keep your other fish from catching the same disease. Third, if your fish is injured, being quarantined will give it the rest it needs to heal. You will need a separate tank in which to quarantine your fish. This quarantine tank should be set up as an empty environment, bare of any decorations. Simply fill the quarantine tank with water from your regular tank and set up the filter as usual. Allow the filter to run for as long as possible so that beneficial bacteria grow properly. Sick fish benefit from a small amount of salt in the water, 3 to 6 teaspoons of non-iodized salt per gallon. If you have no other recourse, move the fish to a goldfish bowls, as large as you can find.
